RGF Kendwa Maternity Clinic
Back in 2019, the clinic recorded just under 16,000 outpatient visits. Today, that number has nearly doubled: over 30,000 patients were welcomed in 2024. This steady year-over-year growth is no coincidence. It’s the result of thoughtful management, a motivated team, and a facility that has adapted—even under challenging logistical conditions.
And it’s not only outpatient services that have increased. Reproductive health services, vaccination programs, postnatal checkups, and chronic disease management have all expanded. Every data point reflects a community that turns to this clinic because it sees it as reliable, present, and grounded.
Maternity: Safety and Responsive Care
In 2024, the clinic safely handled 526 deliveries—without a single maternal death. That’s no small feat in a rural setting. The clinic also carried out 46 timely transfers to higher-level facilities when patients’ conditions required it. This is a key sign: the clinic knows its limits and acts promptly to protect lives. Postpartum follow-up was another strong point, with 939 checkups carried out—often essential for catching issues in the first weeks after birth.
A particularly telling number comes from family planning services: in 2024, the clinic assisted 995 women, 533 of whom were new patients. This marks a cultural shift in the making. Just four years ago, new patients totaled only 166. Today, many more women are turning to modern methods, supported by daily counseling efforts. Vaccination coverage also saw a significant boost, with 4,818 doses administered—including HPV protection for 363 adolescent girls.
Training and Institutional Recognition
The clinic’s progress isn’t just external. Internally, things have evolved as well: the medical team has grown stronger, with young nurses gaining skills and autonomy.
Two years ago, they were just getting started—today, they handle shifts in the delivery room with confidence. In 2024, the clinic maintained a Level III out of V in the Zanzibar Ministry of Health’s quality evaluation, conducted in collaboration with PharmAccess. This achievement caught the attention of local institutions: in February 2025, the Minister visited the clinic, praised its results, and provided new clinical equipment.
As services have expanded, new challenges have emerged—a clear sign that the Kendwa Maternity Clinic has become much more than what it was originally designed to be. Every corner of the clinic is now in full use, and the staff work tirelessly to meet ever-growing demand.
But this isn’t a problem—it’s an extraordinary opportunity.
The clinic’s continued rise in patient volume, community trust, and institutional recognition are all clear signals: it’s ready to take the next step. With the right support, it can expand, strengthen, and become a model for community healthcare in high-density settings.
